The Company You Keep:

This was the first film I saw during TIFF, and thankfully, Robert Redford’s dry, hollow and extremely amateur attempt at a thriller didn’t set the tone for the rest of the festival. TCYK boasts an all star (though, disjointed) cast and one of Shia LaBeouf’s best performances, which is unfortunate because the film is so underwhelming. The film goes through the conventions of any thriller you’ve seen, which would’ve been okay if you remotely cared for what was happening during the 2 hour running time. Veronica Mars would’ve had this plot wrapped up in the first 20 minutes. If there’s anything positive I took away from it, it is that Anna Kendrick can do no wrong even in bad movies, and it’s beautifully shot.
