Google’s new wearable project is a smart contact lens with medical uses
ImageGoogle loves wearables and this time it’s getting even closer to your body with a developmental smart contact lens. Through miniaturized electronics, it can apparently measure the levels of glucose in your tears, offering diabetics an easier way to monitor their condition without the needles and the blood — something we’ve reported on a several before. A tiny (really tiny) wireless chip and glucose sensor are wedged between two layers of “biocompatible” contact lens material, and Google is saying that it’s already working on embedding tiny LED lights for notifications, too. There’s been no shortage of developmental contact lens tech over the last few years, but the clout of Google means this could well be the most realistic mainstream offering, in addition to its very practical use cases. Google is currently angling for partners with more expertise in the medical market to help make it happen and is “in discussions with the FDA” to ensure the tech ticks all the right healthcare boxes before it progresses further.

Recode’s got a deep dive on the make-up of the smart contact: we’ve added their science textbook-grade diagram right after the break.

It is a misconception that only expensive skin treatments and costly skin products can make your skin look radiant.

Although, there is no doubt about the fact that good brands apart from being expensive, deliver the quality they commit.

But you can also look beautiful and have glowing skin by following these simple steps each morning before starting your day.

1.    A good wash along with exfoliation
Your day does not start on a fresh note until you wash your face as soon as you get up. After a good night’s sleep it is essential to wash you face with a gentle face cleanser to make it look radiant. Face cleansers should be chosen according to skin type and strong ones such as those that are anti-acne should be avoided on a regular basis. Exfoliating the skin with a gentle scrub is also required at least two times in a week to scrub off the dead skin that makes the face look dull and lifeless. After that you should dab a face towel on your face without rubbing.

2.    Toning and moisturising
For flawless skin you must cleanse, tone and moisturise your face, at least twice a day. Follow this routine once in the morning, before applying your make-up, and once before going to bed. A good toner is essential in your skin care regime as it helps the skin to maintain the proper pH balance and also shrink the pores. Toning should be followed by the application of a cream or gel based moisturiser depending upon your skin type. Dermatologists, however, do not recommend cream-based moisturisers for people with oily and acne-prone skin.

3.    A quick base
For women who are generally in a rush and have little time to get ready, a 3-in-1 solution consisting of concealer, foundation, face powder is a perfect option. Just apply it on the face and neck, and dab it with the fingertips for a glowing complexion.

4.    A neutral colour blush
Beauty experts say that a nicely done base along with a subtle blush shade is the perfect make-up solution. It takes less than 10 seconds to apply, and adds grace and elegance to your face. But make sure you stay clear of using loud shades on your cheeks. That could turn out to be a total disaster. Always buy and apply make-up according to your skin tone.

5.    Well-defined eyes
Applying an eye-liner might look as a very difficult and time consuming task to some. But with enough practice, your hand gets used to it and it can be perfected in one stroke. Well defined eyes always make an impression. Even if you do not have the time to do anything else, apply a thin layer of eye-liner on the upper eyelid and a kohl pencil on the lower one; and let your eyes do all the talking!

6.    Lip gloss
Your look is incomplete without glossy colourful lips. If you are not a big fan of loud lip colours, you can go for a transparent gloss. For women with fairer complexions, colours like blood red or hot pink do wonders. For someone with dusky skin tone, earthy colours such as peach or softer shade of pink or a neutral brown would be perfect. Nowadays, good brands offer a wide variety of lip colours and glosses that have moisturising elements in them that hydrate the lips along with giving them a glossy coat.

So, these were the most essential beauty tips that every woman should follow. These tips will not only ensure that you feel good outside but will also give you a healthy glow from the inside.

Why do our fingers wrinkle when wet?

Image

Did you ever wonder why do our fingers wrinkle when wet? A series of laboratory tests have shown that wrinkles evolved, to help you grip wet objects! Image © wikipedia   According to the tests results fingers wrinkle when wet, to allow a better grip on wet objects, like the car tires in the rain.  “In this study, we show that submerged objects are handled more quickly with wrinkled fingers than with unwrinkled fingers, whereas wrinkles make no difference to manipulating dry objects.” The wrinkles that occur in skin after prolonged exposure to water are sometimes referred to as pruney fingers or water aging. This is a temporary skin condition where the skin on the palms of the hand or feet becomes wrinkly. This wrinkling response may have imparted an evolutionary benefit by providing improved traction in wet conditions.  In the recent past the common explanation was based on water absorption in the keratin-laden epithelial skin when immersed in water, causing the skin to expand and resulting in a larger surface area, forcing it to wrinkle. Usually the tips of the fingers and toes are the first to wrinkle because of a thicker layer of keratin and an absence of hairs which secrete the protective oil called sebum.

Signs Of Damaged Hair In Winter

Signs Of Damaged Hair In Winter

Image

The chilly winters are here and so are your damaged hair. Most people complain that their hair becomes dry and damaged during the winters. Obviously, the dropping mercury levels are the real cause of dry hair. However that can be fixed with a good hot oil massage.

The real challenge is in knowing that your hair is actually damaged. This can happen only if you look out for the signs of damaged hair keenly. It does not always have to be split ends in your hair or unexplained hair loss. Some signs of damaged hair are difficult to detect.

1. Losing Lustre: When your hair is unhealthy, the first thing it loses is lustre. Your hair will not shine with the glow of good health if it is damaged.

2. Split Ends: Next comes the split ends in your hair. Your hair starts developing split ends; literally speaking, the ends of your hair split into two parts. This spoils the shape of your hair and gives it a rough and tattered look.

3. Slow Growth: As soon as you have split ends in your hair, your hair stops growing normally. The growth of your hair is painfully slow and sluggish. This too indicates internal damage of the hair follicles.

4. Change Of Colour: When black hair gets damaged, it develops an auburn reddish colour. This is not the natural brown colour of a healthy brunette but an ill-looking brown that indicates that your hair is unhealthy.

5. Hair In Your Comb: As the bunch of hair in your comb or brush grows thicker, you need to get the hint that your hair is damaged. There can be many genetic causes of hairfall too, but the most common cause is root damage.

6. Brittle Hair: Hair that breaks easily or is brittle is also damaged. This means that their is a lack of nutrients in your hair and scalp. Basically, your hair is malnourished.

7. Dry Hair: Dry hair is not the same as damaged hair. However, dryness is the beginning of damage hair. So you need to nip it in the bud.

8. Thinning At The Ends: Have you ever wondered why your hair looks limp? It is because it is thinner at the ends than at the top. This is the most common sign of hair damage that we miss out easily.

9. Prematurely Greying Hair: Greying is a natural procedure of ageing. However, if you star greying at 25, there is something wrong with your hair and the good news is, it can be fixed with a little efforts.

Do not miss these signs of damage hair this winter. Are there any other symptoms to know if your hair is suffering from damage?

HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE Let’s say it’s 6.15pm and you’re going home (alone of course), after an unusually hard day on the job. You’re really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don’t kno w if you’ll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself..!! NOW HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE.. Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Share this and save someones life. :-)

8 Ways to Get Rid of Cellulite

ImageWhen you’re half naked on the beach, the last thing you want to worry about is cellulite. But don’t let dimply skin keep you from slipping on your swimsuit. Instead, stop cellulite—or at least camouflage it—with these tips and products.

First, Understand It

Cellulite sucks because, well, if your mom has it, chances are you do too (aka it’s genetic). Lumpy, bumpy skin is caused when fat presses up against the vertical connective tissue that surrounds fat cells in our thighs, for example. This creates a bulging of the cells, resulting in a dimpled effect (picture your skin pushing through fishnet stockings).

But even if it runs in your family, there are ways to minimize its appearance…

Eat a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet plays an important role in keeping the signs of cellulite at bay. Eat plenty of fiber and whole grain foods (such as bran and oat cereals), since they help to remove waste and toxins from the intestinal tract, as well as fruits and vegetables.

Also, drink plenty of agua. If you increase your daily intake of water, your body will begin to shed its excess fat, including the fat stored as cellulite. The water will also help strengthen the collagen in your skin, helping to reduce the lumpy look.

Exercise Regularly

Since cellulite is fat, excess weight can contribute to it. That’s why it’s important to engage in physical exercise like walking, jogging, swimming, yoga, etc., several times a week.

Massage Your Trouble Spot

This sudser has multiple nubs on it that allow you to massage cellulite, stimulating circulation and breaking up fluids beneath your skin, leaving a more even appearance. Bliss Fat Girl Soap, $18, sephora.com also exfoliates away dead cells and contains caffeine to help tighten skin.

Use an Exfoliator

If massage nubs aren’t quite your thing, spring for a caffeine-filled body scrub and pay special attention to your area of concern.

When used topically, a ground coffee exfoliant, like B3 Barista Bath and Body One Lump or Two Coffee, Sea Salt, and Tubinado Sugar Body Scrub, $28, b3products.com, promises to break up fatty deposits as you massage it into your skin. It also tightens it up with caffeine, and hydrates and plumps your skin with avocado oil

Smooth on a Serum

Blast cellulite with a serum, like Nivea Skin Firming Cellulite Serum with Q10, $10.20, amazon.com.

When used daily, this ultra-concentrated formula with L-Carnitine, lotus leaf extract, and Coenzyme Q10 helps reduce the signs of dimpling in as little at 10 days.

Wear Slimming
Workout Gear

Whether or not you’re wearing a swimsuit, form-fitting clothes—especially spandex—can highlight cellulite.

When you’re working out, minimize the look of dimpling with Proskins Slim Cycle Shorts, $95, amazon.com. Not only do they provide an instant slimming effect, they’re also infused with ingredients like retinol, vitamin E, and caffeine that help tighten and hydrate skin, leaving your legs looking less lumpy after you take them off

Use Self Tanner

Since there’s no cure for cellulite (you can just minimize its appearance with products that take time to work), the quickest fix to camouflage lumpy skin is self tanner. Slather on St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, $38.50, amazon.com to disguise your dimples in a flash./cosmopolitan.com

10 ways to maintain weight loss

Image

You’ve worked hard to shed those extra kilos – sweating it out at the gym, denying yourself cheese and chocolates – but, it’s not over yet.

Most people once they have achieved their target weight fall back into old habits and pile on the kilos within months after losing them. This yo-yo approach to weight loss has its own drawbacks, for one it increases the risk of having a heart attack and secondly, it leads to loose and baggy skin. So, follow the ideas enumerated below to keep those kilos off for good!Image

Count your calories

It’s always a good idea to keep a food diary and record what, when and how much you eat. That way you can go back and learn from your mistakes. Don’t eat lots of high calorie food in one day, balance your meals. For example, if you’re going out for a big lunch, eat low calorie yet filling foods for breakfast and have a light dinner with the focus on soup and salad.Image

Try yoga

If you are tired of your regular exercise that you followed while on the weight loss plan, do something different to up your metabolic rate. Try joining a yoga class in the morning or even spinning or pilates. Do whatever interests you so that you won’t shy away from it.Image

Ditch those bad habits

Eating fried snacks or salted cashews at night, popping chocolates at any given hour, mindless munching while in front of the television will all reverse your hard work if done habitually. Stay away from the cookie jar and ask your spouse or family member to remind you of your goals if you head for some high calorie comfort food. Better still don’t keep it in the house.Image

Sip water

Whenever the urge to snack arises, sip a glass of water instead. We frequently confuse thirst with hunger. Also if you drink up before your dinner, you are more likely to eat less.Image

Keep yourself in a positive frame of mind

Most of us tend to binge when we’re upset with something or have had a tiff with our spouse. Make it a point to not eat when upset as you will definitely eat more than you intended.Image

Treat yourself occasionally

As a rule eat as much healthy food as you can, so that you can indulge yourself when you really have that craving for a chocolate cake. Follow the 80/20 rule. If you’re eating healthy about 80 per cent of the time, you can ease up for about 20 per cent of the remaining time.Image

Learn to tell portion size

When eating out, notice how big or small the portions are at a restaurant. Avoid going to places that serve large portions, frequent those serving medium sized ones to keep in good shape.Image

Watch the scale weekly

Keeping track of your weight about once a week gives you a clue to whether you’ve lost or gained weight before it goes out of control. If you have gained, you will likely make up by modifying your diet and cutting back on calories.Image

Eat five small meals instead of three large ones

You may have heard this one before but it is so important that we reiterate – eating every three to four hours prevents you from getting extremely hungry and then binging; it also maintains your blood sugar at a steady level so you don’t get hunger attacks!

So go ahead, tweak your habits and maintaining your optimum weight will be a piece of cake!
